How to create a short URL

URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web in which a uniform resource locator (URL) may be made substantially shorter in length and still direct to the required page. This is achieved by using an redirect on a domain name that is short, which links to the web page that has a long URL. For example, the URL "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/URL_shortening" can be shortened to "http://tinyurl.com/urlwiki". This is especially convenient for messaging technologies that limit the number of characters that may be used in a message, such as Twitter and Identi.ca. In November 2009, the shortened links of the URL shortening service Bitly were accessed 2.1 billion times

Create a goo.gl URL

You can shorten URLs to make them easier to share using the Google URL shortener. For example, the short URL http://goo.gl/l6MS takes people to http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/12/making-urls-shorter-for-google-toolbar.html.

Create a shortened URL

  1. Visit the Google URL shortener site at goo.gl.
  2. If you aren’t signed in, click the Sign in button in the top right corner.
  3. Write or paste your URL in the Paste your long URL here box.
  4. Click Shorten URL.
Below the “Paste your URL here” box, you’ll see the long version of your url and the short version. Once created, your link won’t expire unless it has to be removed for spam, privacy, or legal reasons.

Track the use of your URL

You can see how many people have clicked on your URL by visiting goo.gl.
For more detailed information about the URL’s use, including the countries, browsers, and platforms that accessed it, add .info to the end of your short URL. For example, detailed tracking for http://goo.gl/l6MS can be found at http://goo.gl/l6MS.info.
Tracking for all goo.gl short links are publicly visible to all users.

Creating links when you’re signed in vs. signed out

Signed in
  • Your links are automatically added to goo.gl where you can track their use.
  • A unique short URL is created each time a long URL is shortened.
Signed out
  • Your links won’t show up on your goo.gl page.
  • The same short URL is reused each time a long URL is shortened by you or someone else.
